Iceland & East Greenland — Under the Northern Lights

This is not a cruise. It is an expedition, which means the itinerary is written each morning by the ice. What is fixed: eleven days aboard the Douglas Mawson, a purpose-built expedition ship, sailing from Reykjavík into the largest fjord system on earth.

Icebergs the size of small cities drift against autumn tundra. Kittiwakes and arctic terns plunge for zooplankton amid collapsing ice. And in September, once the sky darkens, the aurora — hundreds of miles from the nearest light pollution.

  • Captain’s Suite for two, departing 8 September 2027
  • All onboard accommodation, meals and daily cabin service
  • Every shore excursion and Zodiac cruise, led by the expedition team
  • One night in Reykjavík with breakfast, plus the Golden Circle tour
  • A polar expedition jacket to keep; onboard lectures, doctor, permits and transfers
  • Not included: flights, travel insurance (required), visas, gratuities, optional excursions

The Itinerary

Eleven days, written by the ice.

Aurora runs this as a true expedition — the team reads conditions daily and shapes the route around them. Below is the shape of it.

  • Arrive in Reykjavík

Met on arrival and transferred to the group hotel. The evening is yours.

  • The Golden Circle, then embarkation

Thingvellir National Park, where the Eurasian and North American plates pull apart. Gullfoss, tumbling 34 metres into the Hvítá. The geysirs. Late afternoon you board the Douglas Mawson and throw the lines.

  • Dynjandi

North through Iceland’s Westfjords, watching for whales, to a Zodiac landing beneath the Dynjandi waterfall.

  • East Greenland

Six days with no fixed script — the expedition team reads the ice and the weather each morning. Scoresby Sund, the largest fjord system on earth. Kaiser Franz Joseph and Kong Oskar fjords. Ittoqqortoormiit, the northernmost permanent settlement in the region, population around 500. Musk oxen, arctic hare, and sandstone laid down over four thousand years.

  • At sea

Crossing the Denmark Strait, with lectures from the expedition team.

  • Disembark in Reykjavík

Alongside around 8:00 AM, then transfers to Keflavík.

The Douglas Mawson expedition ship
Your Ship

The Douglas Mawson.

Purpose-built for polar water and named for the Australian geologist who mapped much of Antarctica. She carries a small complement of guests — small enough that Zodiacs launch quickly and everyone gets ashore — with an observation deck, a lecture theatre, and the kind of stabilised hull that makes the Denmark Strait bearable.

  • Your cabin, all meals aboard, and daily cabin service
  • Expedition team lectures, an onboard doctor, and all permits
  • Zodiac excursions launched up to twice a day, conditions allowing

Givebutter alerts you the moment someone tops your bid, so you can decide whether to go again.

3

It closes on gala night

Bidding closes at 5:00 PM Central on Saturday, October 17 — before the gala begins. The winner is announced live to the room that evening.

Why This Voyage Exists

A donation made in someone’s honour.

Aurora Expeditions offered this cabin after learning that Mital Patel — whose photography has carried the story of the last two northern white rhinos around the world — is this year’s Catalyst for Conservation honoree. They called the recognition well deserved, and asked how they could help.

As a Certified B Corporation, Aurora holds itself to the same standard we ask of ourselves: that the work is measured by what it protects. Every dollar of the winning bid goes to the Foundation’s conservation partners.

Somebody is going to Greenland.

It may as well be you. Bidding closes at 5:00 PM Central on Saturday, October 17 — and every dollar of it lands with the rangers, handlers and carers protecting rhinos on three continents.
